I know it's almost Halloween, but COME ON!

I'm standing in my bathroom, curling my hair this morning, when my son comes to me and says, "I just killed a black widow in the garage. See?"

I almost burned my head whipping around to look at him holding a jar lid with a curled up black widow in it. Spiders give me the willies. Seriously. Ask me sometime about my episode in the shower... But the POISONOUS ones? They really REALLY give me the creeps. I took the lid from J. in morbid fascination, and used a credit card to turn her over to see the infamous red hourglass. Of course, the only thing that could possibly happen did, since I was obviously in the middle of a terrible nightmare: two legs uncurled and twitched in a horror scene of epic proportions. I can't believe I didn't drop the lid as I screamed!

We dropped her in a jar so my husband could see. Today at my son's school they are having a fundraiser where they can pay a dollar and wear a hat all day. My son, being the class clown that he is, went to the garage to find some funky hats from my husband's collection we keep in a cabinet in there. The scary part is the spider had its home among the hats on the bottom shelf, and my son said he saw a big black spider, so he knocked it out onto the floor of the garage, and he caught it on the floor by one leg, and it was trying to escape, and my son hit it with a metal thing to kill it (HE THOUGHT!) and he grabbed a lid from the jar of nails, so he could bring it to me.

I've lived in this house almost 5 years and this is our first black widow.

Now, I have a greater appreciation for Jazzy's horror. She moved to Oregon, and in their new home they killed 5 black widows within the first month.

I'll never sleep the same again!

I've owned my house for 25 years and live right next to a forest full of termites. A neigh told me they had found termites in their bathroom. After worring about this, I contacted a local exterminator and asked for an inspection and estimate.

I am happy to report no termites. But our handy dandy inspector did find an "infestation" of spiders. Darn snakes, aren't they suppose to take care of that?

But, no black widows that I've seen.

ICK. I don't mind spiders, but Black Widows are the exception. They're creepy. Shiny. Spindly. Ew.

I had a friend who kept one as a pet once, and named her Bernadette.

Again, ick. *sigh* Boys...

SML,

I am sorry that happened to you!

We actually ended up killing SIX within only about two or three weeks! I am STILL creeped out about it! I will not even go and sit on my little front porch because I am afraid they are still there!

Now I am all itchy!!!

:)

Oh, yuck! Nothing I hate worse than things with more than four legs! And spiders are right at the top of the heap. I just bought a house this year and I'm waiting apprehensively to see what comes out of the woodwork as the weather turns colder. Ick!

Now that is freaky, a spider that could kill you with a bite...man I'd be getting that garage checked by someone that does those kinds of things...thank God I am in Canada and we don;t have spiders like that (yikes).

Christy, I think you would if it was the only alternative. I kill spiders in my office all the time, but if one is particularly aggressive or fast, I have to get my boss to do it. I hate having to get my boss to do it, but I make sure he knows he's my hero each time he does.

The best method I think is to spray it from about a mile away. Hair spray, bathroom cleaner, bug spray. Same difference. There was that one time I squirted about a cup of conditioner on one and buried it alive while I was in the shower...that method is extremely effective.

I know I am irrational but I would rather have 10 black widows to just one roach...unless it was the smokeable variety!! I see one and freak out! I had a three inch flying roach fly straight at my face when I was young...I guess I have never recovered!! Sorry that you had such as stressful start to your day!! :)

Spiders, I can handle - I get them on a piece of paper or in a cup and take them outside. Good spider karma, I guess.

I'm with JOOM with roaches - can't stand those things. Completely freak me out!

Since I work so much my wife gets bug duty. The big thing for us are beatles. At least we are away from the mountains here so we don't have to worry about scorpions. My parents have those and we get worried my daughter will get stung by one...
